Responsibilities include:

• Research and develop innovative welding methods that enable lightweight vehicle construction

• Assess welding processes suitable for high volume automotive body construction applications

• Evaluate capability and trade-offs associated with competing joining processes

• Conduct balanced portfolio of long-term research and shorter-term development

• Design experiments and conduct statistical analyses of data to optimize welding process parameters

• Identify and implement novel weld process improvements and protect intellectual property

• Procure materials and conduct weld ability assessments

• Characterize mechanical and metallurgical properties of welded joints

• Assess welding process robustness to key manufacturing variables

• Direct suppliers conducting welding experiments

• Interface with internal customers to ensure research alignment with stakeholder needs

• Develop engineering specifications and design guidelines

• Support plant trials

• Document findings via oral presentations and written reports

 

 

Position Qualification

Degree: Master of Science, Other Master's Degree

 

Required Major: Engineering-Manufacturing, Engineering-Other, Science-Metals or Metallurgy, Technology-Welding

 

Desired Degree: Doctor of Philosophy

 

Desired Major: Engineering-Manufacturing, Engineering-Other, Science-Metals or Metallurgy, Technology-Welding

 

Requirements:

 • Preferred: Doctoral degree in Welding Engineering or a related discipline with research focused on welding.

Minimum requirement:

• Master of Science in Welding Engineering or a related discipline with 5 or more years welding research experience.

• Experience in USW, GMAW, LBW, or RSW of aluminum

• Demonstrated capability in research and development, including the conduct of gap analyses and literature reviews, experimental scoping and design, conduct of welding trials, and analysis and documentation of results

• Experience with automotive body construction methods

• Experience in metallurgical sample preparation and analysis

• Demonstrated capability in data analysis and documentation

• Exemplary written and oral communication skills

• Proficiency with statistical analysis packages

• Strong interpersonal skills

• Passion for innovation

Job Description

What Will You Do?
Each year, the Navy completes hundreds of construction, renovation, maintenance and building projects all over the world. You may find yourself surveying a critical airstrip location or conducting tests on soil samples for an amphibious landing zone. Or you may piece together satellite images to form large-image maps of a foreign town destroyed by an earthquake or a typhoon, providing important information for rescue and rebuilding efforts. The duties found in this field are of the utmost importance to the Navy and call for detail-oriented, resourceful and creative personnel. As a member of this field, you may be called on to:

Prepare technical illustrations and graphs
Assist construction engineers in developing final construction plans
Conduct land surveys and prepare maps, sketches, drawings and blueprints
Operate heavy equipment such as trucks, bulldozers, backhoes, forklifts, cranes and asphalt equipment
Perform interior finish work, such as installing drywall, paneling, ceramic tile, ceiling and floor tile, millwork and trim
Lay out plumbing for a new barracks
Interpret blueprints
Install, operate or repair heating or air-conditioning systems
Handle welding or repair equipment
Operate power production and electrical distribution systems
Install wiring or electrical equipment
Adjust ignition, fuel, electrical or hydraulic steering systems

The ideal candidate would possess the following qualifications:
Bachelor of Science in Engineering or Construction Management
A minimum of 10-15 years experience (with at least 5-10 years of construction management or resident engineering experience) working on small and large civil/environmental construction projects.
P.E. and/or CCM preferred. Additional certifications and licenses in general contracting, water, and wastewater a plus.
Water and wastewater treatment plant and pipeline related experience preferred
Strong organizational, written/verbal communication skills, and prompt/accurate judgment abilities a must
Excellent time management skills are essential
Must be a team player, self-starter and detail oriented
